Historical Background
In
late 1956, General Electric (GE) introduced the famous NPN 2N170
hobbyist/experimenter transistor.
This device, which was manufactured using the unique “rate-grown” process
developed at GE, allowed performance at much higher frequencies than the previously
announced PNP audio 2N107 hobbyist transistor. Here is how GE advertised the 2N170: “GE, by providing this
first low cost RF high frequency NPN, has opened up many new areas of
venture for the do-it-yourself addict.”
If you built a radio in the late 1950s, you probably used a 2N170!!
