HISTORIC
NOTES The CBS Hytron 2N156 was an early entry in the germanium power transistor market. It used a unique cylindrical shape, with a large threaded insert which allowed a massive brass flat headed bolt to be used to mount the transistor to a heat sink – the large bolt allowed heat to travel down the bolt where it would contact the other side of the heat sink. The 2N156 was one a series of similar transistors, which included the 2N158 and 2N158A. The 2N158 was widely used in the military in the 1950s and was designated a JAN device. Raytheon bought out the CBS Hytron company in the late 1950s, and continued to manufacture this series through the 1960s. The 1962 Lafayette Radio catalogue lists the CBS 2N156 for $3.75 and the 2N158 for $5.25. |
