HISTORIC
NOTES In the early 1950s, CBS purchased the Hytron vacuum tube manufacturing company located in a suburb of Boston Massachusetts, as part of a plan to enter the rapidly growing semiconductor business. Beginning in 1953, such products as point contact germanium diodes and transistors, as well as alloy junction transistors were being manufactured by the acquired company, known as CBS Hytron. Starting in 1956, the 2N180 and a series of related general purpose alloy junction transistors began to be appear – the series included the PNP 2N180 and 2N181, and the NPN types 2N182, 2N183 and 2N184. These transistors were never produced in large quantities, although a line of germanium power transistors manufactured at the same time, such as the 2N155, were quite successful. |
